BIOS error about VT-X/AMD-v during installation (and I've tried the FAQ)

Hi there,

I have exactly the problem described in this FAQ:

“This computer doesn’t have VT-X/AMD-v enabled. Enabling it in the BIOS is mandatory.”

But I’ve tried the suggested fix with no success. I’ve removed Local and tried to reinstall after rebooting. Double-checked the BIOS setting has been remembered (which it had) but I still get the error on install. I’ve tried it with the second Virtualisation option enabled and disabled:

Any ideas please?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Do you have Hyper-V enabled? I believe Hyper-V can cause this error.

Hi there,

I had this error whilst trying to install Local as well.

There was a hint in the .VirtualBox log folder I discovered, about a usb issue.

I had a wireless usb installed for mouse. Took it out, hey presto everything fine!

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Gareth

Hi Clay,

Thanks for the help.

Hyper-V’s never been enabled :confounded:

I’m a bit stuck without getting Local working on this PC (I’m a paying Flywheel hosting customer)

Hi Gareth,

Thanks for the help.

If I look at C:\Users\Chris.VirtualBox\VBoxSVC.log I see this:

What bit of software does “This computer doesn’t have VT-X/AMD-v enabled. Enabling it in the BIOS is mandatory” come from? Is it Virtual Box that throws that error, or Local?

Cheers,
Chris

H Chris,

Sorry for late response.

Have you been into your BIOS and enabled Virtualisation? That is what the error is saying.

What happened to me is that I received the error massage, fixed my BIOS setting, after a bit of panicking,
Restarted installation again, then got the same error message. After a few tries, I came across the log, which hinted at a usb error. I removed wireless mouse usb and everything worked ok.
Having just looked at a log from last night, can see a similar error but there isn’t one attached. lol.

Hope this helps a bit.

Regards,

Gareth

Hi Gareth,

I did - there’s a screen grab on the first post - I’ve tried all combinations on the two virtualisation settings in the BIOS, but no joy.

I might have to give up on this one

Thanks for your help,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Do you know the model of your PC? Also, do you have detailed specs like what the CPU is, RAM, etc?

Hi Clay,

Is this attachment helpful? It’s a HP Compaq 8200 Elite SFF PC.

Did you ever try also enabling VTd?

See https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-and-Recovery/Cann-t-enable-the-virtualization-technology-on-the-BIOS/m-p/1445159#M49179

Hi Clay,

You know, I’m sure I tried that already, but I just tried that again and it worked. Thanks! All installed now.

Thanks for your help,
Chris

Hi!

Unfortunately I still have the problem.
I’ve set up successfully on the BIOS, But still the same error message! “This computer doesn’t have VT-X/AMD-vn enable…” :frowning:

My PC: Dell Optiplex 7800

Hi @csongi16,

Please see http://lifeofageekadmin.com/enable-virtualization-on-dell-optiplex-755-to-run-oracle-virtualbox-4/

Thank you, now it works!

Hello, I went through my computer settings and found that my processor doesn’t support the virtualization technology.

Then, there is a way to install Local by Flywheel, or it’s impossible.

PS: my laptop model is Dell Studio 1555.

Thank you for your time and great support.

Hi Mostafa,

Thanks for the info!

Do you know what CPU your laptop has?

Thank you for tha fast reply Clay,

My CPU is

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU,T6500 @2.10 GHz 2.10 GHz, hope you can help

Hi @mostafakhayri,

I wish I had better news! Unfortunately, the T6500 doesn’t support virtualization. Please see “Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x) ‡” on this page: https://ark.intel.com/products/39311/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T6500-2M-Cache-2_10-GHz-800-MHz-FSB

Then there is no other way to install Local ?

Not at this time. Local uses Docker which requires virtualization support (Intel’s VT-x or AMD-v) to run.
